Discover Newport News, VA

Historic Newport News was settled in 1621 and  is approximately 22 miles long and 4 miles wide. It is the fourth largest city in size in the state, with it's boundaries encompassing 62 square miles. Newport News has a population of approximately 170,000 people.

The city was named after Captain Christopher Newport in 1610.   Captain Christopher Newport met the Jamestown Colonists on Mulberry Island (located offshore on the James River) as they were preparing to return to the Mother Country after a year of starvation and illness. The news of his arrival with three vessels, laden with provisions and supplies, gave heart to the dispirited colonists who agreed to return to Jamestown. In gratitude, they named the point of landing "Newport's News." Over the years, the "s" was dropped, thus the name became NEWPORT NEWS.

Newport News has a place in our country´s military history. It played a major role in the Peninsula Campaign during the Civil War and also known for the "Battle of the Ironclads which took place in 1862.  In addition, Camp Eustis now known as Fort Eustis, was named after  Brigadier General Abraham Eustis and was a major military base during  WW1.

Here in Newport News, we experience all four seasons. In the winter, our average annual snowfall is less than 8 inches, so don't expect too many sleigh rides. Spring brings some showers for our blooming flowers therefore, expect 4.37 inches of rainfall as the average per month. Summer temperatures' average mid 80's; perfect for sunning, swimming, boating, and fishing. Fall's pleasant temperatures average mid 60's; ideal weather for viewing our fall foliage while cruising the James River, hiking along one of our many trails, or canoeing on one of our lakes. Newport News is a great place to live and we welcome you joining us!
