Portsmouth, with it's 65 acres of land on the shores of the Elizabeth river, is a city with a rich 252 year history. It was founded as a town back in 1752, by William Crawford, a wealthy merchant and ship owner. Crawford named the town after Portsmouth, England. The 65 acres were originally part of Colonel Crawford's extensive plantation. Portsmouth was given status as an independent city in 1858. Its location as an East Coast deepwater port has been the common denominator of the City's development throughout its centuries of growth. Dr. James W. Holley, III, Mayor of Portsmouth, calls Portsmouth, the "City of Choice" for the 21st century. It is a place for people to live, work, play and visit.
