Discover Portsmouth, VA

Portsmouth, with it's 65 acres of land on the shores of the Elizabeth river, is a city with a rich 252 year history.   It was founded as a town back in 1752, by William Crawford, a wealthy merchant and ship owner.  Crawford named the town after Portsmouth, England.   The 65 acres were originally part of Colonel Crawford's extensive plantation.   Portsmouth was given status as an independent city in 1858. Its location as an East Coast deepwater port has been the common denominator of the City's development throughout its centuries of growth.

Dr. James W. Holley, III, Mayor of Portsmouth, calls Portsmouth, the "City of Choice" for the 21st century.  It is a place for people to live, work, play and visit. Experience the charm of Portsmouth and stroll along the city's famous Seawall and walk through three centuries of history in one of America´s most historic neighborhoods. Many of Portsmouth´s attractions are clustered within easy walking distance of each other, making it the perfect place to spend a day. And with its central location, it´s easy to get to - just a quick ferry ride from downtown Norfolk, a 20-minute drive from Virginia Beach, and less than an hour from Colonial Williamsburg. So come explore the city's five museums (including the largest children´s museum in the state), tour historic landmarks and enjoy unique shopping and dining - all while soaking up the city´s unique ambiance.
