The land where Norfolk, Virginia  sits was  originally the Chesipean Indian town called Skicoak. It wasn't until 1682 that Norfolk was laid out as a city and towday is it now is home to more than 234,000 residents and has more than 100 diverse neighborhoods. It is the cultural, educational, business and medical center of Hampton Roads; it hosts the region's international airport and is one of the busiest international ports on the East Coast of the United States.

The city is undergoing a successful renewal, including new office, retail, entertainment and hotel construction downtown, new residential development along the rivers and bay front, and revitalization projects in many of its neighborhoods. The downtown area with it's many restaurants and shops is a prime example of the old world feel blended with modern day times.

The city's popular logo -- an elegant young mermaid, which can be spotted in outdoor sites from Downtown to Ocean View -- symbolizes 300 years of maritime and naval heritage and its modern reputation as a city on the move.

Today, Norfolk, Virginia is a thriving city with a major military center and a chic downtown district with access to many performing arts venues.  Norfolk, Virginia is rich with culture and history.
